7 Tips How to Choose the Right Storage Unit Size

Finding the right storage unit size is important. If you choose one too small, all your items will not fit inside. If you choose one too large, it will be a waste of money. But how do you know which is the right size? Eyeballing it isn’t always accurate, but here is some information which can help.

1. 5x5: This is the size of a small, average-sized closet. If you are looking to store a few spare items or make a little bit of extra space in your home, this is an appropriate choice. One or two larger items (such as a single dresser and a mattress) will also fit.
2. 5x10: This sized unit is the size of a walk-in closet. If you have a moderate number of items around your home which you’d like to store to free up clutter, this is a desirable choice. This is also an appropriate choice for a small office, although you may choose to upgrade to a 10x10.
3. 10x10: This is the size of a small bedroom. If you are moving and need to store items from a one-bedroom apartment or efficiency, this is the unit you need.  This is also an excellent choice for those running a small business out of their homes who need a little extra storage.
4. 10x15: This unit is the size of a larger, more spacious bedroom. If you are moving out of a two-bedroom apartment or a small house, this is an excellent choice for you. This is also the appropriate choice for interior designers, and handymen needing business storage.
5. 10x20: A 10x20 unit is the size of your normal one car garage and can comfortably fit all the indoor and outdoor furnishings of an average two-bedroom home in the suburbs.
6. 10x30: A 10x30 storage unit is a massive unit which is like a one car garage but is a lot longer. If you’re moving out of a four or more bedroom home, this is the unit which would work best for you.
7. Additional Tips: Now that you know about the different commonly available sizes, here are a few additional tips on how to choose which unit would work best for your unique situation:
  • If torn between two units, choose the larger of the two. While it’s preferred to not go too large, it is better to do so than go too small.
  • Speak with the storage unit manager. They will be able to assist you in choosing an appropriate size.
  • Most businesses needing storage units will need between a 10x10 and 10x30.
  • If you need to store a vehicle in your unit, you will need to choose either a 10x20 or a 10x30 unit.
These seven tips should help you choose the right size storage units for your unique needs. Remember that you don’t want anything which is too big or too small. A small amount of empty space in the center for moving around is fine, but anything beyond that is too much.
