Simple Strategies to Help Kids with ADHD

ADHD is a common disorder found in children and adolescents and can continue into adulthood.  There are some simple strategies you can put in place to help your child if he/she suffers from this.

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a mental disorder that can cause hyperactivity and difficulty in paying attention.  Its full name is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  Symptoms include:
  • Hyperactivity
  • Fidgeting and the inability to sit still
  • Difficulty in being quiet
  • Talks a lot
  • Easily distracted
  • Finds it difficult to complete tasks
  • Has trouble with organization
These are just a few of the main symptoms.  If you are concerned that your child has ADHD and has not been diagnosed, speak to your doctor.  Doctors can assess your child and prescribe medication if necessary.  They may also be able to discuss natural remedies such as the benefits of 5-HTP for ADHD. This can be used alone or combined with other medications.

Understand the Condition

Learn as much as you can about the condition from your doctor and your child’s teachers.  Just because your child may think, learn, and behave differently, doesn’t mean they are incapable of learning.  Far from it.  All children can succeed given the right environment and the right support.

Speak to Your Child’s Teachers

Speak to your child’s teachers and work together on how best to support him or her.  Establish goals and share these with your child.  Work towards them in a positive way.

Reduce Distractions

One of the difficulties that children with ADHD face is being easily distracted.  Therefore, seat them away from doors and windows.  This will avoid them noticing passers-by.  Try to alternate activities so that the child does not need to be constantly seated.  Write down the main points so that the child can access them whenever they need to.

React in a Positive Way

Scolding a child for what can be perceived as bad behavior can undermine their confidence. If a child is interrupting, for example, speak to them about this in a non-public way. Praise them for when they don’t interrupt.

Children with ADHD find it difficult to remain in their seats.  They are likely to fidget, squirm and move around a lot.  Try to vary tasks to enable them to move around. Ensure they have access to physical activities such as sport and PE.

Find Their Learning Style

Get to know what your child enjoys and how they like to learn.  Make sure their teachers are aware of this and incorporate it into their teaching.

Following a healthy diet is extremely important for children with ADHD. It can make a significant difference to their lives. Opt for protein-rich foods and complex carbohydrates. Avoid sugary foods that can cause spikes in blood sugar levels. Fatty fish containing omega-3 fatty acids has lots of benefits and can help with impulse control and concentration. Ask your doctor or nutritionist for a diet plan.

All children are different.  They all have their own characteristics and personalities.  And they all learn differently. Providing an encouraging and supportive environment for your child to learn will help them to succeed.
