The summer promises to be a scorcher, so why go overseas this year? Staying at home is cheap, and you are guaranteed all your homegrown comforts to be right there with you! Still, sometimes the heat can get to be a bit much. To make sure you are as comfortable as you possibly can be at home this summer by trying out these amazing ideas:
Most of us are lucky enough to have some yard area or even a garden. In the height of summer, it can be so nice just to hang out there. If you have a pool, that’s even better! Being outside for much of the summer gives you the opportunity to step away from the TV and do something else instead. However, if you really can’t miss an episode, why not stream your content from the internet? On demand or live streaming is available for most channels. Sit in a shady spot, and watch it on your tablet, laptop, or smartphone.
Another perk of being outside is that you can work on your tan. However, it’s really important to be safe in the sun! Make sure you have adequate UVA and UVB protection, so your skin doesn’t burn. Clothing only provides some protection, so be prepared to add some sunscreen to even covered areas. A wide-brimmed hat helps keep the worst of the glare off your face, nose, neck and shoulders.
A tent in the backyard is a great way to stay cool on a hot summer night. Sleeping out under the stars is lots of fun for the kids. If your backyard is big enough, why not have a campout? You may even be able to have a campfire or fire pit to add to the atmosphere. Your grill would work awesome for a cooked breakfast first thing in the morning, too!
When you’ve had enough of the sun, you can get comfortable inside instead. If you don’t have air conditioning, don’t despair. A ceiling fan can be quite effective at moving the air enough to feel some relief. Why not install screen doors so you can securely have a through-air from front to back. They are lockable, so you don’t need to worry about strangers walking into the house when your main door is open (because nobody wants that!).
Hardwood or tiled floors are much cooler in the summer than carpets. It’s nice to walk around barefoot when you’re really hot. Put some popsicles in the freezer so you can cool off. If your fridge makes ice cubes, this can be a really nice way to stay chilled in the heat. Add them to juices, or add a splash of soda to make a nice and healthy cooler.
When it’s hot outside, it’s important to drink plenty of cool drinks to stay hydrated. Cold showers can be nice, too. If you’re really feeling the heat, wear a loose fitting long-sleeved shirt. Wet the cuffs. This will keep you cool by lowering the temperature around your wrists. Stay cool this summer and enjoy the good weather, wherever you may end up.
